First

You'll need to have sorted out somewhere to host your file. See Creating Your Own Configuration for that.

Once you've done that, you'll need to edit the configuration to reflect how you want the plugin to behave. This article describes how to use the editor at http://editor.memberplugin.org to do that, but you can also do it manually.

The editor doesn't edit the preferences directly.  Instead you must:

  • upload a copy of your preferences to the editor
  • edit them
  • download them from the editor
  • then upload them to wherever the plugin points at.

Read on for more details.

Creating a Configuration

There are two ways to create a configuration:

  • You can create one from scratch.
  • Or you can use one of the standard configurations as a basis, and tweak it.

NOTE: When you are told to 'enter your group name' you need to put the last part of your homepage url - for example, for Edinburgh Freegle, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EdinburghFreegle you need to put EdinburghFreegle.

...from scratch

Do this as follows:

  • Go to http://editor.memberplugin.org/.
  • Enter your group name (the last part of your Yahoo URL, e.g. eg. EdinburghFreegle) but leave the Current Config box empty.
  • Click the Edit button.
  • Make your configuration changes.
  • Click the Download new configuration file button to save the file to your local disk. Give it a sensible name, e.g. if your group is EdinburghFreegle then use EdinburghFreegle.js.

You still need to apply the configuration - see below.

...from a standard configuration

Do this as follows:

  • Save either http://www.memberplugin.org/MemPrefs.js or http://www.memberplugin.org/MemPrefsFOP.js to your local disk. Give it a sensible name, e.g. if your group is Edinburgh'Freegle then use EdinburghFreegle.js.
  • Go to http://editor.memberplugin.org/.
  • Enter your group name (the last part of your Yahoo URL, e.g. EdinburghFreegle).
  • Click the Browse button and find the copy you saved.
  • Now click the Edit button.
  • Make your configuration changes.
  • Click the Download new configuration file button to save the file to your local disk. Replace the version you had earlier.

You still need to apply the configuration - see below.

Editing a Configuration

Do this as follows.

  • If you're not sure you've got an up to date copy, download your configuration file to your local disk.
You can reveal more or fewer configuration options by changing the Configuration Options Available setting to any of Basic, Normal or Expert. Expert displays the complete list of editable options.
  • Click the Download new configuration file button to save the file to your local disk. Replace the version you had earlier.

You still need to apply the configuration - see below.

Applying a new Configuration

Once you've got a new configuration file, you need to upload it to replace your old version. For example, if your configuration is being held in the Files section of your group, upload a new version there.

It may take up to 24 hours for your members to spot changes. But if you move your mouse over (but don't click) the Disable button, you should see the changes next time you reload the page.
